Week One Recap

It’s hard to believe that the first week of the 2017 Legislative session is now over. What a whirlwind it was! Monday was a special day as I was officially sworn in to office. Words cannot describe the feelings I experienced as Georgia and the people of the 29th District entrusted me to serve them over the next two years. What an honor it is to have this privilege! Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way! My parents, my wife and my children were able to join me for the day. We toured the Capitol, made LOTS of pictures and made lifelong memories. My fellow Legislators have been extremely helpful at every turn, especially the other Hall County delegation members.

As the day wrapped up on Monday, Speaker Ralston instructed the House that we were to send notice to Governor Deal that we were actively engaged in doing the work of the people and that the session had officially begun. I was invited to be a part of the Escort Committee to go and tell Governor Deal that we “are officially in session”. Quite the honor for a freshman!

Tuesday was a day to get somewhat settled into the formalities of session and learn how the days unfold.

On Wednesday, Governor Deal delivered his annual “State of the State” speech. During this time, he outlined a number of his priorities and budget items for the upcoming session. Once again, I was truly humbled and honored to be a part of the Escort Committee to bring Governor Deal onto the House floor to make his speech!

Wednesday was also the day that I received my committee assignments. The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives. In addition to being officially sworn in, the Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named me to the following committees: Game, Fish & Parks; Higher Education; and Interstate Cooperation. I am honored to work on behalf of these committees and pledge to earnestly read all legislation presented to me.

Thursday was the 2017 Sportsmen’s and Coastal Day at the Capitol, and I was proud to be part of the Ducks Unlimited delegation that attended to celebrate the outdoors. My fellow Georgia DU state committee member, Jeff Barnes, was able to join me as we discussed priorities with Game, Fish & Parks Chairman, David Knight.

We now stand adjourned until 11am on Monday January 23!
